Tucson’s Spookiest October Yet

Sep 28, 2010
Every October, Old Tucson Studios transforms its Old West theme park into Nightfall, an asylum controlled by the mad scientist Dr. Jebediah Hyde and his terror-inducing experiments. Open Wednesday through Sunday all month, visitors can enjoy the terror of the park’s live shows such as the “Mad Science Mission Show” and the “Goulliard Gargoyles,” as well as haunted attractions such as the Death Row Haunted Prison and the Iron Door Haunted Mine.

The park will also be screening movies entered in its video contest and will announce the winners on Halloween night. Tickets are $25 per adult, $20 per child under age 12.

From Oct. 22-23  and Oct. 29-31, the Colossal Cave in Mountain Park will be hosting the Halloween Howl offering haunted hay-rides, games, and candlelight cave tours.

The Tucson Zoo will be holding its annual Howl-o-ween on Oct. 22-23  and Oct. 29-31.  The family-friendly event includes costumes, decorations, trick-or-treating and select animals on display. Tickets are $5 per person.

The Spooky Kids Halloween Costume Contest at Tucson’s Fourth Avenue shopping district will take place on Oct. 30 from 5-9 p.m. The free event includes trick-or-treating, scary movies, a live disc jockey and, of course, a costume contest with prizes.

On Nov. 7, Tucson, Ariz., will host its 20th Annual All Souls Procession. Modeled after the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos, thousands of walkers, dancers, drummers and stilt-walkers will parade through downtown Tucson in remembrance of the dead.  The two mile colorful procession will include costumes, art, and altars in honor of lost loved ones. Organized by the non-profit arts collective Many Mouths One Stomach, the celebration is not only for grief and loss, but also serves as a platform for local artists.  The procession’s finale will include an aerial circus and pyrotechnic performance by Flam Chen. As a precursor to the event, children can face paint, decorate wings and sugar skulls, and participate in storytelling and theater workshops in The Procession of Little Angels on Nov. 6.
