Utah Rings In New Year With Cultural Lineup

Dec 29, 2010
Utah’s art scene will ring in the New Year with a cultural lineup for travelers of all ages to enjoy, including the 50th anniversary of the famed Utah Shakespeare Festival. In 2011, Utah will further strengthen its commitment to the arts, breaking ground on a multimillion-dollar performance venue in Salt Lake City and renovating the Capitol Theatre, where the Broadway tour of “Lion King” is currently being staged.

“The arts have always been a priority in Utah, and we are thrilled to offer a wealth of festivals in 2011 that truly capture the state’s success in the arts and culture arena,” said Leigh von der Esch, the managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism and Film. “The developments underway in the coming years will strengthen Utah as a cultural center for the arts and entertainment industry, as well as a thriving tourism destination for travelers looking to experience the arts.”

From May 12-14, 2011, the Zion Flute & Drum Festival: Celebrating the Rhythms’ of Mother Earth will take place within Zion National Park. A variety of musical workshops are scheduled throughout the festival in order to give attendees a better understanding of the native flute, drum-making and percussion. Admission is $2 for adults, and children under age 12 are free.

Celebrating its 35th year this summer, Salt Lake City’s Utah Arts Festival will be held on June 23, 2011. Over the years, the festival has grown into a four-day event, featuring more than 130 visual artists, 100 performing arts groups and 18 culinary artists that entertain more than 80,000 patrons. The arts festival is billed as the largest outdoor multi-disciplinary arts event in Utah.

The coming year marks the 50th anniversary for the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival in southern Utah’s Cedar City with performances scheduled for June 23 through Oct. 29, 2011. The festival is one of the oldest and largest in North America and features the plays of William Shakespeare as well as other international playwrights. A series of events and performances have been organized in celebration of the Festival’s anniversary including the “We Are Such Stuff as Dreams Are Made On” traveling photo exhibit and “The Music of Shakespeare” display at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City.
