Xanterra Parks & Resorts, operator of Zion Lodge in Zion National Park, has completed a comprehensive renovation of its historic Western Cabins, which were originally built in 1927 by the Union Pacific Railroad and are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Xanterra partnered with Archdeacon Designs to restore the original look and feel of the cabins while, at the same time, updating them with modern materials, plumbing and electrical systems.
Changes include the removal of carpeting and refinishing the original fir flooring, the addition of custom-designed replica furniture by Old Hickory Furniture Company and the addition of draperies and custom-made blankets to replicate the original Native American textiles found in the cabins. Double sconces, finished with a black powder coating, adorn each bedside, and the beds are dressed in 300-thread-count cotton sheets. The cabins also feature ceiling fans, air conditioning, water heaters and desks with built-in power outlets.
"The cabins and baths were inspired by Union Pacific archival photos and have been redone to capture that feeling of a bygone era that has made our national parks one of our country's proudest achievements," said Trina Smith, general manager of Zion Lodge.
Zion Lodge's motel rooms have also been upgraded with new carpeting, window treatments and bedding. Televisions are scheduled for installation by mid-July.
The property is open year round and features 81 rooms, 40 cabins, a restaurant, a cafe and a gift shop.
