The Royal Hawaiian, which opened in Waikiki on Feb. 1, 1927, is located on the legendary site of Helumoa, cherished by Native Hawaiian royalty and once home to hundreds of coconut trees. This photo shows the hotel’s Coconut Grove garden and running fountain in May 1927. Today, the Coconut Grove is still an oasis of coconut, banyan and monkeypod trees — a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern Waikiki. // (c) The Royal Hawaiian
