What
Miguel Torruco Marques, Mexico’s secretary of tourism, recently announced that the 45th edition of Tianguis Turistico, the country’s largest travel-related trade show, will now be held in two parts. The first-ever Digital Tianguis Turistico will take place in September (exact dates to be determined), and the in-person event will be held in March 2021 in the city of Merida. Additionally, Marques announced that the second edition of the Tianguis Turistico de Pueblos Magicos is still scheduled to take place Nov. 26-29 in the city of San Luis Potosi.

Why It Matters
Under normal circumstances, Mexico is a top destination for travel advisors, and Tianguis Turistico highlights many of the new opportunities agents can offer to visitors. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s not surprising that the massive in-person event has been moved to 2021, but it’s encouraging to see that Sectur, the Mexico tourism office, is still working on a virtual way for parties to connect. Also, the scheduling change puts more importance on the event planned for November in San Luis Potosi.

Fast Facts
- Marques said Tianguis is updating its format to meet six objectives: protect the health of all Mexicans and participants; promptly reactivate tourism in the country; empathize and support an industry that has been financially affected; further evolve and innovate Tianguis Turistico, in alignment with the latest trends in the meetings segment; to be an edition of Tianguis Turístico that is inclusive, a first for the show; and the continuation of an event that belongs to all of us, one that we should preserve as an important institution that represents us all.

- Tianguis Turistico de Pueblos Magicos seeks to promote the tourism packages of the 121 “Magical Towns” of the country, as an engine to boost domestic tourism.

What They Are Saying
“As a result of a long and careful process of analysis by the Organizing Committee and of a consensus with leaders and key actors from the tourism industry, today we announce that the 45th edition of Tianguis Turístico has evolved into a new format in response to the new reality imposed by the global crisis of COVID-19,” Marques said. “It has transformed into an innovative event with both a digital component and a live, in-person version that will be held on different dates.”
