What
The southern and Western U.S. are calling to this year’s spring breakers, who are flocking to Orlando, Fla.; Phoenix; and Miami, according to a new report from travel insurance provider Allianz Partners. Florida is well-represented on the list of top cities for domestic travel this year (landing five out of the top 10 cities), along with Western destinations such as Phoenix (No. 2), Las Vegas (No. 5) and Salt Lake City (No. 8). Meanwhile, the top three international cities attracting clients this spring will be in Mexico (Cancun, San Jose del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta).
Why It Matters
Although more than three-fourths of travelers (77%) are looking to stay within the continental U.S. this year, the spring breakers of 2021 share many similarities with those of the (pre-pandemic) past.

Warm and sunny destinations continue to reign supreme. And there will be fewer clients booking trips this year — Allianz reports that 43% of customers booking 2021 spring break travel are those who “always travel” or “travel most of the time” during this time of year. Another trend holding steady, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, are the top domestic destinations. Orlando will be celebrating its fifth year in a row as the No. 1 domestic destination, and Las Vegas has held steady at No. 2 for 2021, 2020 and 2019.
Fast Facts
- More than 1.8 million flight itineraries were analyzed for trips between five and eight days in length.
- Larger cities have seen a decrease in interest; New York City (No. 5 in 2020 and No. 4 in 2019) and Los Angeles (No. 4 in 2020 and No. 3 in 2019) are no longer in the top 10, replaced by Honolulu (No. 9 for 2021) and Denver (No. 10 in 2021).
- Forty percent of those surveyed plan to take a road trip, and are seeking out destinations with outdoor attractions (such as beaches and mountains) and active activities (such as camping, hiking and biking).
- In November 2020, more than 500,000 Americans visited Mexico, and they will continue to travel there in 2021 due to less restrictions to enter the country.
- Other international destinations that have eased entry requirements have moved up on the list (such as Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which moved from No. 10 to No. 6 this year) and Costa Rica (which is new on the list).
What They Are Saying
“Americans are beginning to travel again with almost half of our travel-forward customers planning a trip for the 2021 spring break season,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications for Allianz Partners, USA. “Our survey also shows many travelers are planning domestic getaways and looking for a dose of Spring Break sunshine in Florida, Hawaii and out West, while international destinations like Mexico and the Dominican Republic will also welcome winter-weary travelers.”
