Following the normalization of relations between Cuba and the U.S. in mid-2015, Chad Olin spent the summer in Havana, living with locals and witnessing the power of experiential travel firsthand. Now, as CEO and founder of Cuba Candela, Olin strives to create one-of-a-kind travel experiences in Cuba for couples and families.
What makes Cuba a great family travel destination?
Cuba’s welcoming culture and incredible hospitality, in addition to the lack of widespread internet, creates a thought-provoking environment for deep conversation about family values. Cuba is extraordinarily safe and accessible, too. Though there are many cruises to Cuba, it is also easy to fly directly from major U.S. cities. And infrastructure has improved significantly, while confusion about travel has resulted in fewer crowds. Cuba by land is a secret destination, but that won’t last forever.
How do you help families plan travel to Cuba?
We take care of everything. We create private custom itineraries and arrange for accommodations and guided excursions. We assist with documentation for travel authorization, and we offer two categories of travel: People to People guided group travel, and Support for the Cuban People independent travel.
What are the top destinations for families in Cuba?
Havana is a must. Old Havana exudes a cultural vibrancy and energy, and activities range from cooking classes and salsa lessons to attending a baseball game and visiting local attractions. Meanwhile, in the town of Vinales, we visit a local organic farm and a multigenerational family. There, clients have the opportunity to donate toys and school supplies for children.
