Origins Luxury Lodge opened in 2018, launching the Origins boutique brand in Costa Rica on 111 acres of private rainforest. Now it’s doubling its portfolio with Origins Astral Lodge, set to open in November 2025 — with a third yet unnamed property also in the pipeline.

Origins Astral will be located adjacent to the first property — newly referred to as Origins Floral Lodge — in the northern part of the volcano chain in Bijagua, Costa Rica. While guests can walk from one property to another to catch a yoga class or a meal, there are some key differences between the two.

Most notably, Astral will be able to accommodate families and larger groups — such as wellness retreats — with seven two- to four-bedroom lodges, while Origins Floral focuses primarily on couples with six one-bedroom lodges and one three-bedroom lodge.

Complementing Flora’s nature focus is Astral’s celestial theme, inspired by its perch some 2,600 feet high in between the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes. The new hotel was designed by local architect Mario Aviles and the design firm Gensler in collaboration with the Indigenous Maleku tribe.

"For us, the word ‘origins’ means to go back to Mother Earth and return to our roots, so ancestral history means a lot to us,” said Claudia Silva, general manager of Origins Luxury Lodge.

Silva explained that this region of Costa Rica is strongly tied to the nomadic Maleku group, which now has only 550 members.

“It is currently the smallest tribe among the eight Indigenous groups from Costa Rica,” she said.

As part of its research, the Gensler design team spent time with Maleku tribal members and learned about their way of life, their intricate crafts and vibrant traditional colors.

Integrating the local community is paramount to the brand, which employed 90% of its construction workers from the surrounding area. The hotel will continue to hire locals and is collaborating with the government on creating a technical school.

The lodge is committed to community involvement and sustainability, with more than 80% of all furniture within the lodge crafted at Origin’s own on-site workshop. Most of the wood used on the property was sourced from trees that have naturally fallen, as well.

The celestial world inspired the design of the entire property, from the color palette to the design details in the furniture. Silva shares that some elements include a cloud-like mesh at reception, dancing flames at the farm-to-table El Cosmo restaurant, the rings of Jupiter on guestroom ceilings and big rocks used to simulate meteorites.

"It is fun to discover all these elements related to the astral, and it is a learning inspiration for the entire family, since kids and parents can have fun learning about the stars and planets,” she said.

Kids ages 4-14 will enjoy a complimentary kids’ club, offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., where they can learn about renewable energy, permaculture and bee pollination. Younger guests can be chaperoned by a caregiver.

"Older kids are also welcome, but we want to attract kids who are motivated to learn about wildlife and biodiversity,” Silva said.

Adults can also enjoy celestial-themed programming, including stargazing and astrology talks during the dry season.

“Guests can watch the Milky Way through our telescope and wonder about the immense galaxy,” she said. “There are very interesting topics that bring back the ancient Indigenous groups with their deep knowledge about the cosmos.”
