HAL Taps Storbraaten and Tihany for New Pinnacle Ship

May 13, 2013

Holland America’s largest ship, the first in the 2,660-passenger Pinnacle class, will be designed by marine designer and architect Bjorn Storbraaten and designer Adam D. Tihany.

Scheduled to debut in February 2016, the ship will be constructed wider than previous HAL vessels and still be capable of passing through the Panama Canal, thanks to the expansion plan that will widen and deepen the waterway by 2015.

New York-based Tihany Design is known for its collaboration with celebrity chefs, creating multiple signature restaurants for such well-known chefs as Wolfgang Puck, Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud and Charlie Palmer. Tihany also created a collection of eight signature restaurants for Sirio Maccioni of Le Cirque. In 2011, he was appointed art director of the Culinary Institute of America, updating the Hyde Park campus.

During the last 30 years, the firm has created interiors in properties including the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles and One & Only Cape Town. In addition, there are numerous hotels showcasing signature venues by Tihany, including The Breakers, The Broadmoor and Hotel Cipriani in Venice.

Yran & Storbraaten Architects is one of the world’s leading architectural firms, specializing in cruise ship design; their recent work includes the new Seabourn ships and Viking River’s Longships, and Storbraaten designed the public rooms on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. The new ship will feature new public areas and dining venues, created in partnership with these two leading firms. Several new concepts are under development that have never been seen before on a Holland America Line ship, and as they evolve more details will be revealed.

“We are fortunate to bring together such distinguished professionals for our next-generation ship,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs for Holland America Line. “The ambience of a ship is an essential part of the cruise experience and we are confident that Adam, Bjorn and their teams of experienced designers and architects will strike the right balance between contemporary and traditional that is the hallmark of the interiors of Holland America Line ships.”
