Hurtigruten Expeditions, the world’s largest expedition cruise company and the pioneer of the world’s first hybrid battery-powered cruise ships, is adding a well-known adventure destination to its 2022 lineup: The Galapagos Islands.

“We are extremely excited to expand our South America offering to one of the most spectacular destinations on the planet,” said Daniel Skjeldam, CEO of Hurtigruten Group. “We have seen a clear trend of travelers seeking out truly unique and meaningful travel experiences, with a sharp increase in demand for the type of small ships [and] big experiences we offer. The pandemic has dramatically pushed this development forward. There is huge pent-up demand for traveling right now, and we are responding with this breathtaking new destination.”

There is huge pent-up demand for traveling right now, and we are responding with this breathtaking new destination.

Starting Jan. 5, clients booked on nine-day Galapagos Islands itineraries will cruise for six nights onboard the fully upgraded 90-guest MS Santa Cruz II, a small purpose-built expedition ship. The addition is part of a long-term partnership with Ecuador-based Metropolitan Touring, a local operator in the Galapagos that has nearly 70 years of experience in the expedition cruise space.

The ship’s upgrade — included as a part of the new partnership — will include enhancements to all suites and cabins; the explorer lounge; and the dining room and bar. Clients can also enjoy a newly added “Science Area.”

“This partnership brings together two companies that combine the best of two worlds: Hurtigruten Expeditions as a global player with an excellent reputation in expedition cruises, and our long history and deep knowledge of the Galapagos Islands,” said Paulina Burbano de Lara, CEO of Metropolitan Touring. “We are really excited to welcome the first Hurtigruten Expeditions’ guests onboard.”

Pre- and post-cruise packages are available, including a four-day pre-extension to Machu Picchu in Peru. Highlights of the Galapagos itinerary include exploring a giant tortoise breeding center; getting up close to sea lions and land iguanas; bird-watching; kayaking; snorkeling; and onboard lectures on the local area, which is home to more than 9,000 species.
