In the final segment of its 116-night Grand Circumnavigation
World Cruise, Regent Seven Seas will host National Aeronautical and
Space Administration (NASA) astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Charles
Duke, two of the 12 individual to have ever set foot on the moon.
On April 18, 2009, the 700-guest Seven Seas Voyager will depart on
the 20-day journey from Istanbul to Ft. Lauderdale.
"As men whose accomplishments have contributed significantly to
our collective scientific knowledge, we are honored to host Drs.
Mitchell and Duke aboard our 2009 World Cruise," said Mark Conroy,
president of Regent Seven Seas. "Because our World Cruise travelers
are united by a passion for exploration and discovery, we are
pleased to present distinguished experts from various fields of
endeavor to enrich the guest experience."
Dr. Mitchell piloted the 1971 Apollo 14 mission, becoming the
sixth man to ever walk on the moon. Along with Apollo 14 commander
Alan Shepard, Mitchell holds the record for the longest moonwalk (9
hours and 17 minutes), and has traveled further on the surface of
the moon than anyone else. On board the Seven Seas Voyager,
Mitchell brings experience as a scientist, naval officer,
astronaut, entrepreneur, author and lecturer. Dr. Mitchell is also
a member of the Astronaut Hall of Fame and recipient of the
Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Likewise, Dr. Duke served as a lunar module pilot on the Apollo
16 mission in 1972, which was the first expedition to explore the
moon’s rugged Descartes region. He was the 10th and youngest man to
ever walk on the moon and part of the mission that set the record
for the longest lunar surface stay (71 hours and 14 minutes). Dr.
Duke is now an author, motivational speaker and recipient of the
NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
The two astronauts will be joining the Seven Seas Voyager in the
last of the seven segments in the 2009 World Cruise. The Grand
Circumnavigation begins January 12, 2009, and departs from Los
Angeles. The tour’s segments each offer a wide range of land
adventures and onboard activities and lecture programs.
The first segment of the journey, which runs from Jan. 12 to
Feb. 1, is a 20-night voyage from Los Angeles to Auckland. The
second segment sails 12-nights from Auckland to Sydney (Feb. 1-13),
and the third segment is a 21-night voyage from Sydney to Shanghai
(Feb. 13-March 6). The fourth segment consists of a 12-night trip
from Shanghai to Singapore. From Singapore, the Voyager sails
14-nights to Dubai (March 18 to April 18). The sixth segment is a
17-night trip from Dubai to Istanbul (April 1st to April 18) The
seventh and final segment of the Grand World Cruise extends from
April 18 to May 1 and will include Drs. Mitchell and Duke.
Individual segments of the Grand Circumnavigation World Cruise
