Royal Caribbean International has ordered a new ship that will
overtake even its forthcoming Freedom of the Seas in size. The new
220,000-ton, 5,400-passenger ship is being developed under the
project name Genesis at the Aker Yards in Finland. Scheduled for
delivery in fall 2009, the Genesis vessel will measure 1,180 feet
long, 154 feet wide and 240 feet high. Its energy-efficient design
will boast a modified hull, plus innovative air conditioning, water
production and treatment systems.
The overall cost of the ship will be approximately $230,000 per
berth, which is comparable to the cost of the line’s Freedom-class
ships. Royal Caribbean also has an option for a second Genesis
vessel.
“Project Genesis truly is a remarkable ship. Its bold design,
daring innovations and technological advancements will delight our
existing cruisers and help us draw in new ones,” said Royal
Caribbean chairman and CEO Richard Fain.
Royal Caribbean currently has three new builds under
construction at the Aker Yards. The first to be completed is
Freedom of the Seas, which debuts this June. At 158,000-ton,
3,600-passengers, she will be the world’s largest cruise ship.
