Portugal’s Algarve Coast, including the popular city of Lagos, is an alluring sanctuary for surfers on holiday. So, it’s fitting that the best new coffee shop in Lagos — aptly named Coffee & Waves — sells not only appetizing artisanal coffee (such as cold brew, drip coffee, flat whites and lattes), but also beautiful, handcrafted surfboards, too.
Open since June, the cheery establishment is full of Instagrammable corners, thanks to a white-and-pastel color palette (including a millennial-pink Victoria Arduino coffee machine) and lots of stylish local goods. In addition to surfboards from Bob’s Boards (made by Samuel, one of owners of Coffee and Waves), apparel, ceramics and artwork are all available for purchase.
But the eye candy is simply a lovely bonus for those who, like yours truly, are more interested in obtaining sustenance — preferably in the form of something caffeinated or healthy.
Luckily, Coffee & Waves also delivers in those aspects: I gulped down an iced almond-milk latte — a welcome respite from the many espressos I had consumed in Portugal so far — and savored a creamy, refreshing acai bowl topped with house-made oat granola, coconut flakes, banana and strawberries.
Also on the limited food menu are made-to-order smoothies and “toasties;” a popular item is avocado toast with fresh cheese and vegetables. Clients with dietary restrictions will be happy to choose from milk alternatives including almond, oat and coconut milks.
Coffee & Waves is open Thursday through Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
