Golf has a rich and diverse history that dates as far back as the year 1400 in Scotland. Prominent historical figures, such as Mary Queen of Scots, were avid golf players. And popularity of the sport has certainly not died down in recent years. In fact, next year, there will be another reason to celebrate the world of golf. The inaugural St. Andrews Golf Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland, will take place March 28 through April 1, 2012. The new festival will provide attendees with a wide variety of golf-themed exhibits and activities, including golf photography, literature, films, guided walks and more.
The St. Andrews Golf Festival is the brainchild of Richard Wax, chairman of Golf Surveys Ltd., and will be coordinated by him and his colleague, Roger McStravick, the event’s chief executive. According to McStravick, St. Andrews itself is renowned as the home of golf, and its scenery has remained largely unchanged in the 150 years it has stood as a cultural center for the sport.
“Tourists will simply be offered an unforgettable experience at the ‘Home of Golf’,” said McStravick. “We are working with a number of celebrated golf artists to create something truly special, including exciting exhibitions dedicated to legends such as Steve Ballesteros, Old Tom Morris, Bobby Jones and the greats of women’s golf. In addition to the exhibits, there will be a lot of fun things to do, such as having a go at golf for the first time, trying your hand at hickory-shafted putting and playing a few holes on the worlds top courses on golf simulators. All in all, it will be a great time to visit St. Andrews.”
Aside from the festival’s attractions and activities, St. Andrews offers several sights, which cater both to golf enthusiasts and general interests. There are plenty of golf shops and historical golf buildings, such as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, as well as other important landmarks including churches, castles and museums.
