When it comes to Maui family attractions, Surfing Goat Dairy is riding a wave. On the slopes of Haleakala volcano, the 42-acre farm delights guests of all ages as its dozens of billies and nannies scamper, bleat and strut their stuff.
Surfing Goat offers three guided tours, including a casual 20-minute stroll and a one-hour Evening Chores experience. The longest option, the Grand Dairy Tour, digs a little deeper into the cheesemaking process and ends with samplings of 20 cheeses that feature ingredients such as mangoes and macadamia nuts.
The goats take center stage throughout, nibbling handouts of hay and posing for photos with goofy grins. They even oblige when it’s time for milking — something everyone can try their hand at. Afterward, families can relax in the shade with a picnic of gourmet paninis from the carryout window. For dessert, goat cheese truffles hit the spot.
For the second year running, Surfing Goat is featuring five-day summer camps in June and July, during which kids learn how to tend the flock and take part in goat-centric arts, crafts and games. It’s a tail-wagging way for young travelers to create lifelong Maui memories.
