For newbies, a vacation in and around Yellowstone National Park likely conjures images of Old Faithful, forested hikes and hulky yet majestic American bison. During winter, though, the region wears a blanket of snow, and with it comes new adventure opportunities that suit all ages.
Families might opt to visit the 184-acre Sleeping Giant Ski Area, a kid-friendly park located near Yellowstone’s east gate. Best of all, fifth-graders from around the country ski free here.
There’s also the option of speeding through the woods on a sled pulled by Alaskan Huskies — Yellowstone Dog Sled Adventures offers hourlong tours or half-day experiences, during which guests learn to drive their own team of pups (best for children 5 years old and up).
And if the chill in the air is too much to bear, families can still embrace the destination by visiting Buffalo Bill Center of the West. Founded in 1917 to preserve the legacy of frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody, the museum is home to thousands of Western and Native American artifacts, making it a great stop for budding cowboys and history aficionados.
