Alfresco Treats

Oct 23, 2002
Hotel spas are capitalizing on the natural healing qualities of their surroundings by offering massages in a variety of outdoor settings, from seaside coves to hidden gardens. Following are a few examples of alfresco treatments available to clients.

On Oahu, Sheraton Moana Surfrider introduced massages. Relaxing in private cabanas, guests choose from Swedish, lomi lomi (Hawaiian deep tissue massage), shiatsu or sports massages. A 50-minute session costs $98. Call 800-782-9488. During poolside massages at Outrigger Reef’s Serenity Spa, therapists work with skin conditioners, tanning accelerators and sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful rays. Outdoor massages at the Waikiki spa cost $85 for 55 minutes and $125 for 85 minutes. Call 800-688-7444.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s Na Hoola Spa provides outdoor massages in a private cabana by the pool. There’s just one cabana available and the service is offered only from noon to 4 p.m. daily, so reservations are recommended. A 25-minute treatment costs $55, with a 50-minute treatment for $110. Call 800-55-HYATT.

Spa Moana, the $3.5 million oceanfront facility at Hyatt Regency Maui, offers massages, manicures and pedicures in seaside cabanas surrounded by lush foliage. The rate for a 25-minute lomi lomi massage is $60. Call 800-55-HYATT. Mandara Spa at Outrigger Wailea Resort offers outdoor treatments in an oceanside gazebo during which two therapists blend Swedish, lomi lomi, Balinese, shiatsu and Thai massage styles, for $180; a reflexology session costs $98 for 50 minutes. Call 800-688-7444.

On The Big Island, guests of The Orchid at Mauna Lani’s Spa Without Walls can opt for massages in private white seaside cabanas or treatments in a wooden teahouse amid waterfalls and tropical gardens. A 110-minute oceanside experience including a body glow, a sauna wrap, and a choice of a massage and a face treatment costs $230. Call 800-845-9905.

Hawaiian Rainforest Salon & Spa at Outrigger Waikoloa Beach offers treatments under a canopy in the resort’s gardens. A 25-minute session costs $50, with 50 minutes for $85 and 80 minutes for $120. Call 800-688-7444.

Lush gardens set the stage for outdoor treatments at Kalona Salon and Spa, located at Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort. A 50-minute open-air massage costs $85, while an 80-minute session runs $120. Call 800-462-6262.
