Wendy’s Restaurants has been named the new title sponsor of the
Champions Skins Game scheduled for Jan. 30 - 31 on Wailea Resort’s
Gold Course. The lineup for the 2004 event is considered to be one
of the most exciting in years, with Lee Trevino set to defend his
title against golf legends Jack Nick-laus, Arnold Palmer and Tom
Watson.
The 17th edition of what is now the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game
includes the first nine holes of a pro-am event and first nine
holes of the Skins competition on Friday, Jan. 30, with the
remaining nine holes of both events set for Saturday, Jan. 3.
The first half of the competition will be televised by ABC-TV on
Jan. 31, with the remainder on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. This is
the fourth year that Wailea Resort will host the Skins
tournament.
“The challenging, exciting format involving four legends of the
game makes this a tournament that truly stands out in the golf
world,” said Tom Mueller, Wendy’s president and chief operating
officer. “We’re delighted to be associated with an annual event of
this caliber, which not only features terrific competition, but
also supports charity.”
In the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game, each hole is a tournament
within itself, with the prize money carried over if no player wins
a hole outright. The $600,000 total purse is broken down to $20,000
for each of the first six holes, $30,000 for each of the middle six
holes, $40,000 each for holes 13 through 17 and $100,000 for the
18th hole. The players will donate 20 percent of their winnings to
the charity of their choice.
The Wailea Gold Course is the most challenging of Wailea Golf
Club’s trio of courses. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the
7,078-yard Gold has been lauded by Conde Nast Traveler as one of
the world’s best-designed golf courses. Since it opened in 1994,
the course has earned honors as one of the country’s 10 best new
resort courses by both Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, as well as
received a historic preservation award from the Maui Historical
Society.
Tickets to the 2004 Champions Skins Game are available at the
Wailea Golf Club pro shops or online. Prices are $20 per day, with
children 12 and under free when accompanied by a responsible,
ticketed adult.
