SPOTLIGHT: HAWAII ISLAND

8.8-15: Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Anglers from around the world take part in this prestigious annual deep-sea fishing contest. Each afternoon, the crews return to the docks with their catches in hopes of winning cash prizes. Visitors cheer them on at the opening Kona parade and weigh-ins at Kailua Pier.

8.22: Volcano Rain Forest Runs. Clients can take part in a half-marathon, 10K or 5K set near the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Participants in this unique running event wind through lava landscapes and rainforests at a 4,000-foot elevation. Routes start and end in Volcano Village.

KAUAI

8.1-2: Heiva I Kauai. At this annual festival in Kapaa Beach Park, performers from Hawaii, the U.S. and Japan showcase authentic Tahitian dancing and drumming. Guests can peruse Polynesian arts and crafts, check out cultural demonstrations and sample local foods.

8.7&9: Slack Key Guitar Concerts. Every Friday and Sunday afternoon, visitors can hear slack-key music firsthand during casual concerts at Hanalei Community Center in north Kauai.

MAUI

8.7: Wailuku First Friday. Here’s a fun and community-minded way for visitors to mingle with residents. On the first Friday of each month on Market Street, the town of Wailuku hosts a party with live entertainment, artists, crafters and food specials at various restaurants.

8.14: Maui Calls. Beneath swaying coconut palms, this benefit gala at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului serves tasty dishes made by island chefs and wines from around the world. Highlights include live music, dancing and an auction of Hawaiian items.

OAHU

8.21-23: Made in Hawaii Festival. Hawaiian products — from apparel and art to food and flowers — fill hundreds of booths at Neal S. Blaisdell Center’s Exhibition Hall in Honolulu. Live Hawaiian music and cooking demonstrations enliven the festivities.

8.22-30: Duke’s Ocean Fest. This summer spree honors Duke Kahanamoku, Hawaii’s revered Olympic gold-medal swimmer, surfer, canoer and Hollywood actor. Daytime events include surfing, beach volleyball, swimming and paddleboarding contests. Evenings bring music, movies and luaus.
