Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui are home to a selection of summer surf
camps with slant. It’s a boarding and bonding experience, so to
speak, bringing women of all ages together to learn how to master
the waves.
Maui Surfer Girls offers girls 12-17 a fun environment that goes
beyond the beach. Founded by local surfer girl Dustin Tester, the
camp teaches technical skills through a sequential program that
caters to the needs and skills of each camper.
Created due to demand, a special seven-day Summer Surf Safari
for mothers and daughters will be held from July 25-Aug. 1.
“It’s cute how it came about,” explained Tester. “Usually
parents just drop kids off at camp. But when moms see the video,
they want to go along! They understand how we’re trying to build
self esteem and they want to participate in the process.”
Priced from $2,100 per person and based on double occupancy, the
camp includes accommodations in a home within walking distance to
the ocean near Lahaina, daily surf instruction with video coaching,
surf equipment, yoga classes, optional afternoon excursions,
airport transfers, all breakfasts and lunches and two dinners.
“This is a great opportunity to bond with your daughter or even
sister, granddaughter or niece, surfing in Maui’s warm waves this
summer,” said Tester. “Our aim is to develop a well-rounded surfer
girl and to empower women through surfing.”

Big Island Girl Surf, Makahiki Adventures, features overnight
surf camps for girls and women, plus surf lessons, camps and island
tours for men and women of all ages.
A special Mother/Daughter five-night camp is scheduled from July
9-13. Priced at $895 per person and based on double occupancy, it
includes accommodations at the Makahiki House B&B in Hilo,
daily surf instruction, healthy meals, yoga and stretch classes,
local activities and excursions. Other weeklong camps are offered
from $1,395 per person.
Camps are designed to take the beginner through the very basics
water safety, surf etiquette, paddling, balance, pop-up technique,
pre-session stretching, wave catching and wave riding technique.
Those with more experience will go through a condensed version of
these classes and get right out into the water.
While every camp is unique, your clients can plan to also
experience snorkeling, outrigger canoe sailing, fishing, Hawaiian
crafts, hula and storytelling.
