The Mauna Kea Golf Course — part of Mauna Kea Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii — has reopened following an extensive renovation led by Robert Trent Jones Jr., marking 60 years since its original debut. The Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed course, which first opened on Dec. 10, 1964, has undergone significant changes while maintaining its historic character, as part of a $200 million renovation of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

The renovation included an upgrade of fairways and greens with seashore paspalum grass (known for its lush appearance); redesigned bunkers; restored holes; sustainability measures; and updated amenities, including GPS-equipped carts, a new pro shop, professional lessons and a practice range. The course's signature third hole, known for its ocean views and kidney-shaped green, remains a centerpiece of the design.

The project is notable for being the only golf course worldwide to feature design work from three members of the Jones family — Robert Trent Jones Sr., who created the original course; Rees Jones, who updated it in previous decades; and now, Robert Trent Jones Jr.

"The Mauna Kea Golf Course has long been hailed as one of Hawaii's top courses, with a deep history and cultural connection to the island," said Kansas Henderson, hotel manager of Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. "With this renovation, we've elevated the course to new heights, while honoring its legacy. By working alongside its original designer's son, Robert Trent Jones Jr., we've ensured the updated course remains true to his father's original vision and continues to be one of the most celebrated in the world."

Other elements of the larger, multi-phase renovation at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel include updates to 252 guestrooms and suites, and the addition of a new spa and wellness center featuring an oceanfront adults-only infinity pool, 11 treatment rooms, an enlarged fitness center and more.

Mauna Kea Resort is also home to The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort and the Mauna Kea Residences.
