Suite Digs On Maui

Apr 25, 2009

Whether it’s the stretches of beach, exotic luaus or its rich art and culture, Maui remains one of the most popular visitor destinations worldwide. During these tough economic times, however, visitors are looking for lodging that’s at once affordable and convenient, even on the most alluring of islands. In response, several Maui resorts are promoting their suites. As they refute the common misconception that booking a suite is costly, they’re pitching the idea that suites can give clients more economical accommodations than traditional hotel rooms.

One of Maui’s newest options is Hoolei at Grand Wailea. Located on Maui’s southwestern shore, it boasts luxury villas measuring up to 4,000 square feet, offering the freedom of a residence with roomy kitchens, enclosed lanais and personal laundry facilities. Guests have exclusive access to a pool with a sandy beach, nine-foot waterfall and children’s pool. Nightly rates begin at $1,000 but, by booking one villa rather than several hotel rooms, large families or groups can save up to hundreds of dollars.

Nearby, the Four Seasons Resort Maui is adjacent to an expansive lawn, providing ample room for children to play. With semi-private gardens and a ground-level view of the ocean, the Four Seasons Resort Maui’s Lokelani Suite ranges from $4,000-$11,000, depending on the number of bedrooms desired. This suite option gives guests the opportunity to save on dining costs by having access to a private kitchen, giving the Four Seasons a home-away-from-home atmosphere.

Diamond Wailea Resort and Spa houses 72 suites, each with a maximum occupancy of four people. Guests can lounge in the resort’s one-bedroom suites, which are perfect for both business and pleasure. Also located on Maui’s southwestern shore, this resort offers rooms with the choice of a gardenview, partial oceanview or complete oceanview. Right now, Diamond Wailea is offering an introductory special of $199 per night in a gardenview suite, booked for stays through May. This price includes daily resort fees, Internet access throughout the hotel, valet parking, a hydrotherapy spa, access to the fitness center and business center, shuttle service throughout Wailea and exclusive access to the beach.

"We offer very competitive rates in each view category, but our current introductory special for gardenview suites is one of the best deals," said Robin Harlow, director of travel industry sales for Aqua Hotels and Resorts, which manages Diamond Wailea. "The special represents a savings of $190 per night but still offers travel agents a commission."

The Fairmont Kea Lani Maui is one of Hawaii’s premier luxury all-suite and villa oceanfront resorts. One-bedroom suites have a living room, separate master bedroom and marble bathroom. Guests can also enjoy a two- or three-bedroom oceanfront suite, both accommodating up to four adults. Kea Lani offers a number of packages to add value to a booking. Depending on the package that clients prefer, prices range from $485-$2,400 per night. Some rates also include the use of a luxury car, minivan or convertible.

Guests at Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, located on Maui’s northwestern shore, can choose from a studio, a one-bedroom villa or a two-bedroom villa. The studio villa is approximately 480 square feet, with enough room to house up to four adults. An islandview studio ranges from $500-$600, while an oceanview studio ranges from $700-$750. Villas allow clients full access to a kitchen and up to 2,400 square feet of space.

Royal Lahaina Resort is set on 27 tropical acres on Maui’s northwestern shore. Each suite recently received a $100,000 makeover, adding new bedding, carpeting and decor. Royal Lahaina gives guests a causal and traditional Hawaiian ambiance, allowing families and other visitors to feel connected to their tropical surroundings. Living areas are separate from bedrooms, but two-bedroom family suites can be connected to an oceanview guestroom for clients who need a little more space. Each one-bedroom suite offers 790 square feet, while each two-bedroom suite offers 1,120 square feet of living space.

These suite options, among many others, make a trip to Maui all the more pleasurable. Assisting clients in booking a suite gives agents yet another powerful tool for selling the island, as well as for earning commission.
