Review: The St. Regis San Francisco

For clients who appreciate fine arts and culture, there may be no finer place to stay in San Francisco than The St. Regis San Francisco. Located mere steps away from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and other major museums, the 260-room property is the epitome of quiet luxury.

The St. Regis San Francisco offers 214 rooms and 46 suites across 20 floors. There’s an on-site restaurant, Astra, as well as The St. Regis Bar, and the adjacent Salon serves the brand’s signature afternoon tea from Thursday to Sunday. Thanks to its prime location south of Market Street, the hotel is also ideal for exploring the nearby neighborhoods of Chinatown and North Beach or attending a Giants game at Oracle Park. Also of note: The Museum of the African Diaspora is on the hotel’s ground floor.

The hotel offers easy access to Union Square, Chinatown, the Ferry Building and more.

Upon entrance, the understated lobby offers a residential feel with built-in chaise lounges that flow seamlessly into the dining and bar spaces. Separate entrances for the St. Regis private residences and two dedicated elevators leading to the conference and event venues eliminates any friction hotel guests might encounter when a large flock of event attendee are on-site.

During my visit, I stayed in the Astor Suite, which featured city views and a separate living area with fresh flowers and unique artwork. I also toured several other suites, including the Presidential and St. Regis Suites. The more premium options include expansive dining areas and kitchenettes, making them well suited for business meetings and hosting.

While only suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows, all accomodations at the St. Regis San Francisco include separate bathtubs and showers. Standard guestrooms still measure around 450 square feet, which is notably spacious by local standards. Amenities include toiletries from Sachajuan and Sodashi, both of which are available for purchase, along with complimentary touches such as bath salts and a loofah.

A stay in a suite at the St. Regis San Francisco also includes the brand’s signature butler service; butlers can assist with packing and unpacking and personalized recommendations. Front desk staff and greeters were always friendly and happy to help, while housekeeping serviced my suite over a two-night stay more than once a day. Throughout my stay, I found the staff warm and attentive yet unintrusive, reflecting a hospitality experience expected at a luxury property.

The fitness center and heated indoor pool are standout amenities, particularly for business travelers looking to maintain their routines during a longer stays. The gym facilities are spacious and well-equipped enough to even meet the needs of major professional sports teams, who are known to favor the St. Regis while competing in San Francisco. In addition to an ample selection of cardio and weight machines, the fitness center includes free weights and a dedicated yoga and stretching studio. The pool is furnished with comfortable lounge chairs and offers a lap pool for swimming; there’s also a mobile dining menu available through room service.

More recently, the hotel unveiled a new luxury spa spanning the hotel’s fifth and sixth floors. The Spa at the St. Regis includes a co-ed Himalayan salt room, plus separate steam rooms, saunas and relaxation lounges for men and women. The warm wood panels and circular motifs create a calming atmosphere throughout the space. Treatments begin with a complimentary drink from the Celebration Bar, followed by a visit to the Scent Bar, where guests can select a preferred fragrance before each treatment.

Among San Francisco’s luxury hotel offerings, the St. Regis offers a truly winning blend of understated elegance, warm hospitality and central location. Book a stay here for high-touch clients, whose worries will evaporate faster than the San Francisco fog on a late spring day.
