Los Cabos built its tourism reputation on luxe beachfront resorts, bright nightlife and championship golf courses, but now tourism movers and shakers in the region are capitalizing on the dramatic desert landscape behind those attractions. The last several years have seen the development of a variety of land activities, from self-drive desert Hummer tours to rollicking camel rides. Los Cabos’ new offerings help clients create a more well-rounded vacation.

Wild Canyon is an adventure park that is home to 10 zip lines, including the longest zip line in Baja, California — at 2,675 feet in length, it hurtles participants down the line at speeds of up to 56 mph. Wild Canyon also has a 330-foot high bungee jump. If those thrills aren’t enough, clients can sign up with the park’s Off Road Runners for an exciting ATV tour or ride camels through the canyon with Camel Quest. Visitors can interact with the camels, feed them snacks and take photos.

Costa Azul Ziplines Eco-Adventure sets up shop at the Costa Azul canyon, where daredevils can take part in an exhilarating cable ride high above the canyon. Suspended safely in a harness, they will fly across trails and over a river.

Baja Outback offers all-day or multi-day Hummer tours through the desert, mountains and other off-road locations in the area. All tours take place in an air-conditioned, armored vehicle and are a great way to see the countryside. My tour included a beach picnic at a secluded east shore beach.

Travelers can also explore the back roads of Southern Baja with different tour operators. High Tide Los Cabos offers clients spectacular views of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains while driving a 4x4 Jeep. For a calmer excursion, try a tour with Carisuva In Touch With Nature, which utilizes new side-by-side Honda off-road vehicles to take participants on a journey through ranches, creeks and rocky terrain with time to admire the region’s flora and fauna.

Finally, horse enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Cuadra San Francisco Equestrian Center, a world-class facility that accommodates riders of all experience levels.
