Viking River Cruises is offering specials on its remaining space for holiday cruises in Europe, with two-for-one savings on brochure rates and two-for-one rates on roundtrip airfare for Category C cabins and above, through Oct. 31.
The itineraries on the Danube and Rhine take in the elaborate Christmas markets with their beautiful lights and wonderful scents of ginger and apple, where townspeople sing carols. Shopping is just as wonderful, from unusual ornaments and handmade candies and cookies to knitwear and local crafts of all kinds.
Among the choices is the eight-day Romantic Danube cruising between Budapest and Nuremberg; at press time the remaining 2-for-1 cruise pricing was $2,056 per person. Don’t miss the famous boys’ choirs of Passau, at the market itself or in historic St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The Regensburg market is particularly lovely, as well, in the medieval town center. And Nuremberg pulls out all the stops for its Christmas market, with amazing light displays. Salzburg also has several festive Christmas markets; among the most prized ornaments found there are hand painted eggshells for decorating the Christmas tree.
The eight-day Danube Waltz between Budapest and Passau still has some staterooms available from $2,056, and the 10-day Winter Holiday cruise from Nuremberg to Vienna departing Dec.19, has availability in Category E at $2,122. Category E is eligible for the roundtrip airfare at the two-for-one rate. In addition to the famous Passau Christmas market, Nuremberg’s joyous lights, Regensburg’s atmospheric medieval setting and the music of Passau’s holiday season are highlights, not to mention the hot wine and festivities of Budapest’s Christmas Fair. Vienna has a number of Christmas markets that are rather easy to find.
