Been There, Do This: Sahra Spa & Hammam at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Sep 20, 2016

From corporate travelers to casino-goers, Las Vegas certainly boasts a diverse clientele. And in between all the business and booze, it can be difficult for clients to carve out time for wellness.

But at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas hotel, guests can escape the hustle and bustle of Sin City by booking a unique spa treatment at the on-site Sahra Spa & Hammam. The spa, which features desert-themed design elements such as sandstone walls and silver ceilings, is also home to one of North America's few functioning hammams (Turkish baths).

Those interested in booking a treatment at the spa's hammam currently have two options (with a third experience slated to roll out in fall 2016): Red Flower Hammam Experience, which incorporates steam and massage elements, followed by an exfoliating coffee scrub (from $300); and Hammam Soap Ritual, where clients will experience a traditional Turkish body buff while lying on the "motherstone" slab, which emits a dry heat (from $185).

"The hammam is great for people who are adventurous in the spa treatments they want," said Shannon Stringert, director of spa, salon and fitness for The Cosmopolitan. "In Las Vegas, you get travelers who have had so many experiences internationally and ones who have never had a treatment before. The service really fits both."

Although the hammam treatments are a main draw of the spa __ one staff member says at least one of the Turkish-inspired treatments is booked every day __ clients who prefer a more traditional wellness experience should opt for Sahra Spa & Hammam's popular Sahra Desert Aromatherapy Massage (from $270).

During my 80-minute detox, several locally sourced and desert-inspired essential oils (such as sage, peppermint, rosemary and others) were aligned on my spine, and my therapist explained that each served a unique purpose once absorbed into the bloodstream.

And rejuvenating it was. After the treatment ended, I still felt enveloped in the oils' woody, fresh scents. Although I was in the heart of Las Vegas' strip, I felt as if I had been transported to my own desert oasis.
