Calgary Stampede Centennial Events

Apr 12, 2012

More than a hundred years ago, a famous working cowboy and vaudeville entertainer named Guy Weadick dreamed of celebrating the romance of the Wild West by establishing a unique rodeo event in Calgary, Alberta. From humble beginnings, the Calgary Stampede has evolved to become known as “the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” In his wildest dreams, Weadick could not have foreseen the extensive festivities planned to celebrate the centennial of the Calgary Stampede from July 6-15, 2012.

ENMAX Corral Show
A spectacular new production showcasing Western horsemanship, incredible effects, and fascinating First Nations performances has been created especially for the centennial.

Centennial Plaza
A new venue built in the center of Stampede Park for the 2012 Stampede, Centennial Plaza will showcase a diverse array of talent.

RCMP Musical Ride
The Musical Ride of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) dates back to 1887 and is still performed today by 32 members of Canada’s national police force. The Musical Ride involves the execution of a variety of intricate riding maneuvers and cavalry drills choreographed to music. Members of the Musical Ride are trained police officers with at least two years of experience in active police work who volunteer for duty with the Musical Ride for a three-year period.

2012 TransAlta Grandstand Show
The 2012 Grandstand show, entitled Century, will feature Paul Brandt and the Young Canadians performing popular songs from the past 100 years. The finale will feature fireworks set off from a three-story birthday cake. Paul Brandt is the most awarded male Canadian country music artist in history, and he began his career after winning the 1992 Calgary Stampede Talent Search.

Light Up the City, Presented by TransAlta
In addition to the Grandstand fireworks, the skies above Calgary will blaze with spectacular fireworks on both weekends of the Centennial Stampede. The fireworks will be launched from all four quadrants of the city, creating a light show of incredible scale and beauty.

Agriculture Celebration Zone
The Stampede was always meant to be a celebration of agriculture, and the Agriculture Centennial Celebration Zone will feature engaging displays representing the Stampede’s agricultural endeavors including the World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition, the Heavy Horse Pull, the Cutting Horse Competition, Draft Horse Town, the World Stock Dog Championship and the North American Sheep Shearing Challenge. The exhibitions will be rotated daily.

Centennial Merchandise
A special line of apparel and merchandise has been created through a partnership with the Stampede and Roots stores. Items ranging from limited edition boots and hats and totes to centennial pancake mix will be available at the Stampede Store and at roots stores. They can also be purchased online at www.calgarystampede.com.
