Crabbing in Rodanthe

Apr 01, 2013

Our 3-year-old son Liam was thrilled when he caught his first blue crab and brought it home to steam for dinner. This is one of the memories we have to share from our family vacation to Rodanthe, N.C. Rodanthe is a part of Hatteras Island, known for its fishing and gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound.

Because we traveled during the off season, we became quickly immersed in the local culture. When searching for a place to go crabbing, a local recommended that we see the Bodie Island Light House and follow along its dirt path to a small saltwater pond. This was where we caught our dinner for the evening.

We rented a vacation home along the coast that was within walking distance of the beach, the pier and a funky store filled with pirate paraphernalia. My husband spent his days fishing while I collected sea shells and built sand castles with the kids. We even woke up early to watch the sunrise and ended our days with walks to the pier for ice cream.

Rodanthe is remote enough that it’s easy to forget the noise of city life and get completely drawn into nature, but it still offers nightlife at places such as StingWray’s Bar and Grill, which serves locally caught seafood and features live music. We will never forget going to bed and waking up to the sound of waves crashing. And there is nothing like the buttery taste of fresh blue crab, caught by your own hands and eaten the very same day.
