Agent Q&A: Carolyn Horne

Apr 17, 2011

In the past year, travel agent Carolyn Horne has visited Oahu every four months, including in October 2010 when she joined a team of agents to walk in the island’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Here, she reflects on a few of her many fond memories of the island.

What noteworthy Oahu hotel have you stayed at recently?
One of island hotels I truly love to stay at is the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. Included in the many great extras is a guided walking tour that provides visitors with an overview of Waikiki’s fascinating history and a free Aloha Friday program with live entertainment, mini-massages and island cooking demonstrations.

Can you recommend a couple of offbeat things to do on Oahu?
There are two on the North Shore. Every Sunday afternoon you can watch games at the Hawaii Polo Club, followed by live entertainment, and they even offer polo lessons. Another option is a glider ride at Dillingham Airfield. Soaring as high as 3,000 feet with visibility for 30 to 40 miles is an amazing way to see the scenery.

How about sharing an unforgettable Oahu dining experience?
It’s hard to pick just one, but Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s restaurant at the new Waikiki Edition has great energy in beautiful surroundings. It infuses traditional Japanese dishes with Western ingredients and preparation.

What’s one of your most memorable Oahu activity highlights?
Taking a lesson with Hans Hedemann Surf School in Waikiki. I definitely recommend semi-private lessons versus the bigger group lessons. It taught me that you’re never too old to try something new.
