Where did you go on your most recent trip to Hawaii?

I took a trip to Kauai in November, just before Thanksgiving. This is the fifth time I’ve visited that island.

What did you do on Kauai?

One of the tours we went on was the 4X4 excursion with Hawaii Movie Tours. It was great fun. They do a terrific job of taking clients to a lot of the places where movies and TV shows were filmed.

We toured the legendary Coco Palms Resort, even though it’s closed HMT has special permission to bring people there. Then we went up into the rainforest where “Jurassic Park” was filmed and hiked a half mile back into the woods. It had been raining that day, and the surroundings looked very much like they did in the movie. I definitely would recommend this tour. For clients who can’t hike, there is an option without the Jurassic Park part.

What did you think of your accommodations?

We stayed at the ResortQuest Kauai Beach at Makaiwa, a good location for exploring the island in either direction. The hotel has been nicely renovated and is easy to get around. I only ate at the restaurant once, for breakfast, and decided it was too expensive for what was served. I noticed a lot of children enjoying themselves at the resort’s pool.

What are you telling your clients about Kauai?

Kauai gets fewer tourists than the other major islands. You can still find the spirit of old Hawaii there, if you just get out of your car and walk around the towns. But there is a lot of construction in Poipu Resort to the south, and in other areas, which is really a shame. It may take a while, but Kauai could eventually be built up like Maui.
