Q&A With International Expeditions

Mar 17, 2014

What sets International Expeditions (IE) apart from other tour companies?
Our guests benefit from outstanding guides delivering extraordinary content, excellent accommodations in natural, historic locations and special or exclusive access to wildlife areas.

What steps does IE take to make an itinerary eco-friendly?
IE was founded 34 years ago as an environmentally sensitive travel company. We hire local guides and naturalists and we make every attempt to buy local food for a fresh and immersive experience. In the Amazon, 25 percent of the foods served onboard are purchased locally as we meet farmers and villagers along our route. We also support more than one dozen conservation and community projects in eight countries.

What other trip features can IE  guests expect?
Traveling with smaller groups allows for more personalized attention and a more meaningful experience in the field. Our travelers are like-minded — the risk of incompatibility within a group is minimized.

What are your most popular tours or destinations?
Our most popular destinations include the Galapagos Islands, Cuba and East Africa. Our Amazon Riverboat Voyage on our newly launched riverboat La Estrella Amazonica is a very popular tour as well. For 2014, we introduced new programs to Myanmar, Colombia and Papua New Guinea, which are appealing to a range of experienced travelers.

Is IE noticing any news trends among adventure travelers this year?
Multigenerational travel continues to increase, but so does the desire for solo travel — this is one of the reasons IE has waived single supplements on every departure of our Amazon and Galapagos voyages. As baby boomers mature, there is no drop off in their love of adventure in travel, but the desire for comfort, excellent accommodations and higher quality programming is increasing.

How is IE working with travel agents?
We offer excellent commissions and great marketing tools. We also have very creative promotional plans to help travel advisors maximize sales and revenue.
