All About Tobago

Jan 07, 2009

The southern Caribbean island of Tobago is providing visitors with new and improved attractions and services throughout 2009. From hotel expansions to new transportation services, Tobago continues to cultivate its burgeoning tourism market.

In hotel news, the Tobago House of Assembly has announced the allocation of $2.3 million to the smaller, boutique hotels on the island, in order to help elevate them into three-star status. Additional expansion projects include the Mount Irvine Bay Hotel and Golf Club, which is adding 35 new rooms and investing over $3.1 million. And both the Crown Point Bach Hotel and the Coco Reef Resort & Spa are adding 25 rooms a piece.

In terms of transportation updates, Delta Airlines resumed nonstop service to Tobago last month. Also in December, the government of Trinidad and Tobago launched the country’s first water taxi system in to help reduce the effects of motor vehicle emissions and to lessen traffic congestion on the nation’s roadways.

To aid in the new water taxi venture, the government acquired four ferrylike vessels, the Su, HC Milancia, HC Katia and Olivia. The largest of the fleet, the Su, has a capacity of 449 passengers, while the other ships carry 150 passengers each.
