Club Med is making a splash in the Dominican Republic with its announcement of a new resort in development on the eastern coast of the country.
Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda will open in Miches, an undeveloped beachfront region situated between Punta Cana to the south and Samana to the north. Most visitors will first fly into Punta Cana International Airport and then embark on an hour-long drive along a scenic highway to Miches.
The all-inclusive property — poised to launch December 2019 — will be Club Med's first 5-Trident (ultra-luxury) resort to open in the Americas. Club Med is positioning the 93-acre resort as an eco-chic experience.
We reached out to Michelle Lardizabal, vice president of sales for the U.S. at Club Med, for an advance look at Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda.
Travelers have a wide selection of all-inclusive resorts to choose from in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. What sets Club Med Miches Playa Esmeralda apart from the pack?
Club Med Miches has two main differentiators: The resort is in a highly preserved and untouched destination, which features new natural gems to be discovered in the Dominican Republic. Also, the resort will feature the Club Med difference — which includes a wide range of sports, activities, kids’ clubs and more — as part of every vacation package.
Will there be any amenities and features at the resort that we haven’t seen at other Club Med properties?
Club Med Miches will introduce some great new concepts to the Club Med brand in North America. This will be the first 5-Trident resort in our region, elevating the resort into our Exclusive Collection.
It will also feature a resort-within-a-resort approach with different experiences and areas on property that are dedicated to travelers of all types (families, couples and active travelers). A big draw for the resort, too, is its eco-chic positioning, which highlights natural elements.

Miches is an exceptional place located in a preserved area on the coastline with limited tourism. You can discover natural hidden wonders, such as the breathtaking Cascada Limon waterfall and the often-photographed Montana Redonda, a "rounded mountain" with 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Miches also rests on the coastline of Samana Bay where travelers can find diverse sea life. A popular attraction of this destination is whale watching.
