The International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA) is awarding its Green Award to Aruba’s Bucuti Beach Resort for being an eco-conscious role model in the Caribbean for more than 20 years.
“Since day one, I have been committed to preserving Aruba’s rich culture and environment while gently educating our guests on what makes the island unique,” said Bucuti Beach owner and CEO Ewald Biemans.
This year’s Green Award will be presented to the resort at a formal gala on Nov. 16 in Beverly Hills, Calif.
The resort was selected partly because of its conscientious staff and Green Team who have worked diligently to conserve the environment.
“Promoting conservation among our staff and guests is a major part of the Bucuti experience,” Biemans said. “Whether it’s participating in one of our resort-sponsored beach clean-ups, interacting with volunteers from [the island’s sea turtle program] or enjoying native cuisine, folklore and music at our restaurant, our guests can count on a truly hands-on, authentic Aruban experience.”
IH&RA also recognizes the resort’s environmental initiatives, such as having 100 percent organic cleaning products, an Ozone machine (to control bacteria, mildew and molds) and for conducting staff training in green cleaning.
Separate recycling waste bins, water-saving toilets and energy-saving lamps are just a few ways rooms are equipped in the same vein. In addition, all the water used in Bucuti’s showers and sinks is exposed to ultraviolet light, which eliminates bacteria, and later recycled by irrigating the grounds with it. Wastewater, on the other hand, is treated at the government treatment plant for reuse by business, such as the island’s two golf courses.
