On April 14, Southwest launched flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico — the carrier’s first overseas destination.
“This milestone is historic as it marks Southwest’s first venture outside the 48 contiguous states, and it’s proof positive that our ongoing integration of AirTran remains on-track as we’re making tremendous progress,” said Ron Ricks, the executive vice president, chief legal and regulatory officer of Southwest Airlines.
On the same day Southwest inaugurated the flight to San Juan, the carrier launched service to four other U.S. cities: Charlotte, N.C.; Rochester, N.Y.; Flint, MI and Portland, ME. The expansion is a result of the company’s continued integration of the recently purchased subsidiary, AirTran Airways.
