The East Caribbean island of Montserrat is aiming to help
couples “kick their mojo into overdrive” for Valentine’s Day. The
British overseas territory, with a population of only 4,500, offers
the intimacy of a private island while offering accommodations and
activities for lovebirds to enjoy.
The Tropical Mansion Suites is offering a Valentine’s Day rate
of $222 per night that includes complimentary champagne, a fresh
bouquet of flowers and a fruit basket as a welcome gift.
The hotel, opened in December 1999, is near to the ferry port,
heliport and Little Bay beach. With 18 guestrooms, the hotel is
intimate but still offers amenities including balconies in every
room, cable TV, ceiling fans and some offer kitchenettes. The hotel
also offers a bar, restaurant, gazebo, swimming pool and an
historic sugar mill on the property.
The “Emerald Isle” itself offers a variety of natural wonders as
well. The island’s dark-sand beaches are a result of grey volcanic
sand, and the Soufriere Hills Volcano, which has buried the city of
Plymouth in the past, now makes for an ideal sunset landscape.
Visitors can also learn about the island’s history and science
at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, which offers telescopes
aimed on the volcano on the observatory patio.
Couples can also go under the sea to experience the island’s
nature and see six-foot barrel sponges, giant Southern stingrays,
moray eels, sea turtles, nurse sharks, barracudas and spotted eagle
rays.
