The “heart of the Mayan World” — Guatemala — has experienced an influx of tourists in the past year. This is on behalf of the promotional efforts of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT).
Their 2014 campaign “Life Lessons” endorses the cultural and natural beauty of the country, particularly in hopes of appealing to leisure travelers. The campaign, along with similar initiatives, directly correlate to the 26 percent increase of tourists visiting Guatemala.
“Due to our unique bio geographical position, the beauty of our traditions and the richness of our history, we have the potential to become a key player in global travel,” said Pedro Duchez, director of INGUAT.
In turn, this surge in tourism has led to several new hotel, airline and cruise line developments. A 140-room Hyatt Place hotel is slated to open in 2016 in the Zona Viva area of Guatemala City. Radisson Hotel and Suites is expanding its space for visitors in Guatemala City; the project is expected to be completed by 2014. Visitors can find new direct flights from Delta Airlines in New York and United Airlines in Washington D.C. to Guatemala.
Sea travel has also increased as more cruise companies, such as the Royal Caribbean, include Guatemala on their cruise itinerary.
