Luxury small-ship operator Aqua Expeditions has announced a collaboration with the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) aimed at bolstering conservation efforts in the Galapagos Islands. As the region's oldest and largest conservation organization, the CDF focuses on preserving the Galapagos' unique biodiversity through scientific research.

The partnership seeks to raise funds for two pivotal CDF programs: Shark Ecology and Conservation, and Education and Community Outreach. These initiatives play a crucial role in safeguarding endemic shark populations and advancing effective mangrove conservation efforts across the islands.

The CDF’s Shark Ecology Program focuses on understanding local shark species' distribution, population status and movement patterns within the archipelago. This research serves as a foundation for developing robust management strategies essential for the long-term conservation of the marine predators, which is considered crucial amid changing environmental conditions.

The CDF’s Mangrove Ecology Program addresses the critical role of mangroves in carbon sequestration and biodiversity preservation. Despite their significance, the Galapagos’ mangrove ecosystems have historically received less attention. The program aims to fill this gap by identifying key areas contributing to carbon storage and marine protection, vital for climate change mitigation efforts.

Aqua Mare passengers on Galapagos expeditions will have the opportunity to engage with CDF delegates both onboard and at the CDF’s Marine Research Center, gaining insights into the foundation’s ongoing conservation projects.

Contributions to fundraising efforts can be made through onboard donations or by purchasing CDF merchandise. A $500 donation toward mangrove ecology will support the cultivation of 50 mangrove seedlings, aimed at restoring areas impacted by volcanic activity. Similarly, a $500 donation toward shark ecology will fund health assessments for 10 sharks, including comprehensive blood analyses necessary for population health studies.
