When in the coastal town of Palermo, Italy, do as the Palermitani do: Eat a ton of seafood.
This was one of my top priorities during a recent visit visiting to Sicily’s capital city, located on the northwestern side of the island. When I peppered Wim, the concierge for Grand Hotel Wagner downtown, with my questions about where to find good local seafood, he provided a range of options, but sounded particularly excited about Oste dello Stabile.
I followed his advice and headed four blocks away to the eatery — which I almost walked right past, as its entrance is unassuming and looks like a wine bar. But head into the establishment and turn left, and you’ll find a large seating area, an open kitchen and some of the best seafood you’ve ever had.
I ordered the grilled seafood plate, which was nothing short of a feast. (The dish typically serves two, but the waiter informed me they could make it for one person for half the price.) Salmon, octopus, shrimp, prawns, squid and white fish all graced my plate, dressed simply with olive oil, lemon and herbs.
While meat and vegetable options are available, the bulk of the menu highlights the fruits of the sea. You’ll find busiate pasta with clams and shrimp; bucatino (a type of spaghetti) with anchovies; and risotto with squid ink and sea urchin featured alongside stuffed squid, shrimp skewers and fresh fish of the day.
Whatever you choose, be sure to pair it with a glass or two of vino from Oste dello Stabile’s extensive wine list.
