The academic year may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the learning has to stop. Following are three family-friendly educational tour options that are perfect for exercising the brain — no classroom required.

Discover African Wildlife With Cox & Kings
Families can venture to South Africa with the new 11-day South Africa Family Discovery private journey from Cox & Kings. The itinerary will take clients to Cape Town, Grootbos Nature Reserve and Madikwe Game Reserve. In Cape Town, families have the opportunity to swim with African penguins at Boulders Beach, learn about the country’s flora and fauna on Table Mountain and visit Tsoga Environmental Center. Then, at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, clients can choose to relax on the beach, whale watch, go horseback riding, play soccer with local children or get a full-body therapeutic massage. Families will also have the opportunity to scope out the Big Five at Madikwe Game Reserve with a special daily game drive designed for children 4 years old or younger.

Explore Edinburgh With Context Travel
Context Travel has unveiled Quills and Magic Wands: Literary Edinburgh, a new child-oriented walking tour in Scotland that serves as an introduction to the literary heritage of the area. A historian and guide will lead families through the city during the two-hour trip, which is available every day of the week except Sunday. The walk is thematic and chronological and explores the works of literary legends such as Walter Scott and J.K. Rowling. The tour also features interactive activities that encourage kids to read, explore language and analyze selected poems and texts. Groups are limited to six participants.

Wild Planet Adventures Immerses Families in Costa Rican Nature
Tree-hugging travelers will enjoy Wild Planet Adventures’ new family experience: Costa Rica Ultimate Wildlife Eco-Tour. The hands-on program introduces children as young as 8 years old to biology and conservation and takes families on expert-led nature excursions in up to eight national parks and wildlife reserves. Clients will depart in July or December, and each itinerary lasts between nine and 14 days. Highlights include whitewater rafting, a zipline excursion, a visit to natural hot springs and a snorkeling adventure. Animal lovers will be able to interact with sloths in a sloth rescue program and go sea kayaking with dolphins. The nine-day itinerary begins at a rate of $3,398 per person, and the two-week itinerary begins at $4,998 per person.
