Disney Reveals Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge Updates

Fans of Disney parks — and probably most people on earth — already know that “Star Wars”-themed lands are currently being built at Disneyland in California and Disney’s

Hollywood Studios in Florida. At this year’s D23 Expo, new details were unveiled about these highly anticipated lands.

“To say we’re excited for the ‘Star Wars’-themed lands to open in 2019 is an understatement,” said Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “All along, we have said this will be game-changing, and we can begin to see how truly epic these immersive new worlds will be.”

The two lands, which Chapek revealed will be called Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, will take guests to a remote trading port on the edge of wild space, representing a new chapter of storytelling that guests have come to expect from Disney parks worldwide.

Chapek also provided a first-ever look at what guests will encounter on this never-before-seen planet when the lands open in 2019 — first at Disneyland, and later in the year at Walt Disney World. Both new 14-acre lands — the largest single-themed land expansions ever — will feature two anchor attractions: one giving guests the chance to pilot the Millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission, and another putting guests in the middle of an epic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

“Each attraction — and even the land itself — will offer guests the chance to immerse themselves in the ‘Star Wars’ universe like never before,” said Jennifer Fickley-Baker, editorial content manager for Walt Disney World Resort.

Another related addition will be a “Star Wars”-inspired resort debuting at Walt Disney World as part of a new Disney 360 vacation concept. Accordingto Chapek, this experience will be a living adventure with guests literally participating in Disney storytelling.

“From the second guests arrive, they will become part of a 100 percent immersive ‘Star Wars’ story,” Chapek said. “The story will touch every single minute of their day, and culminate in a unique journey for every person who visits.”
