A study from the Family Travel Association and New York University’s Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism revealed that affordability is the greatest factor in determining how respondents chose to plan their trips. The study, focused on the decision-making process of families who travel, showed that higher household income corresponds to increased rates of traveling internationally, as well as a preference for resorts and air travel.
The study also separated family travelers into three distinct groups. “Hassle-Free Travelers” prefer all-inclusive resorts and organized tours. They are less likely to take their children out of school and prefer to do little research before trips.
The most dominant group, “Cautious Travelers,” is more likely to choose family-friendly hotels and theme parks due to worries about safety, hygiene and food options. However, those in this group were more likely to research ahead of time and allow their children to miss school.
Families in the last category, “Intrepid Travelers,” enjoy new and unusual destinations and cultures and are more apt to take their children out of school for vacations. This group also values travel over material goods.
