I never thought I’d find a French-style chateau deep in the heart of the jungle, and I most certainly didn’t think that, were I to find one, it would also be an incredible organic wellness resort. However, The Chateau Spa & Organic Wellness Resort was just awarded the International Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Services, adding another accolade to a growing list of awards.
Modeled after the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle in Alsace, France, the property sprawls across more than 16,000 acres and is part of a French-themed village resort among other recreational attractions located in Berjaya Hills, Malaysia.
What makes The Chateau standout is its dedication to wellness and an organic experience. What might come across as contrived — the theme of French luxury in a jungle setting — ends up feeling comfortable and healing. The goal of the property is to offer world-class luxury, a holistic spa and wellness program as well as a sense of well-being and enrichment — and the resort does just that, starting with a refreshing welcome drink and a cool, scented organic towel for guests upon arrival.
Rooms are spacious, all linens are organic and a partnership with Irish company, Voya, means that all bath amenities, which were specially designed for the hotel, are also USDA-certified organic. And the resort’s dedication to the environment extends beyond its amenities. The hotel has cultivated three organic farms that supply the hotel’s produce, converted its chlorine pool to saltwater, recycles leftover organic food into organic fertilizer and features a stunning living wall in its entryway.
The spa, La Sante, is also devoted to organic wellness and blends the European spa experience with Asian concepts. Therapies are developed specifically for the individual and include stress relief, weight loss, beauty and body pampering, pre- and post-natal treatments, programs designed for men as well as retreat programs and more. Herbal baths, the Salt Grotto and Aquaveda heated beds serve to enhance relaxation.
Dining at the resort is, of course, devoted to whole foods, and my meal at L’Assiette, a fine-dining experience featuring French cuisine, was definitely gourmet. Not only were the dinner and dessert incredible, but I was also impressed with the restaurant’s selection of organic wines.
While it may seem odd to stay at a French castle while visiting Malaysia, it will feel exactly right once you’re there.
