Elbow Beach Bermuda has been a Bermudian staple since 1908, when it opened as the first lodging property on the island’s signature pink-sand South Shore beaches. The newly independent boutique hotel offers 98 cottage-like guestrooms and features one of the island’s most popular spas, as well as a collection of high-end restaurants.
Another fixture at Elbow Beach Bermuda Resort, chief concierge Rochelle De Silva has worked at the resort since 1999, and was the second Bermudian woman to join the British Les Clefs d ‘Or, a prestigious certification that is the highest standard of professional service that can be given to a concierge.
What sets Elbow Beach Bermuda apart from other Bermuda properties?
It’s the location. The accommodations and the cottages literally cascade to the beach. It’s the only hotel with the beach at your feet. We’ve noticed that our guests enjoy staying on the property almost exclusively because we have four restaurants, all right on the beachfront, as well as a pool and tennis courts.
But for those who are looking to head off property, we’re centrally located, so it only takes a few minutes to get to the city, which has several high-end shops and cultural institutions.
What is the most frequently asked question you receive, and how do you answer?
Guests always come up to ask me what to do and what to see in Bermuda. For the first-time visitors to the island and to Elbow Beach, we suggest a taxi tour that takes them to the historic center of St. George’s, which was the first settlement by the British, along with many other historical structures close to St. George’s. We feel it’s important to introduce guests to the history of Bermuda — while it’s a great place to relax, there’s also a unique past.
What on-site feature do you recommend guests not miss?
Our motto at Elbow Beach Bermuda is to “be chill.” On a Friday night, we have a great local entertainer performing musical sets that even island residents come to hear. If you’re more active, we have amazing kayaking and snorkeling that you can do right off our beach. An early 1900s shipwreck occurred right off our shores, and guests can literally swim up to the site from our hotel.
We also have a wonderful spa, though for a more unique service, we can set up treatments in a pool cabana, terrace or even right on the beach.
What off-property site should visitors be sure to see?
There’s a glass-bottom cruise that we recommend. Guests can learn historic facts and legends of our island. With all the historic sailors and pirates who have stumbled across our island, you can imagine all the stories — whether true or not — that we hear.
