Puerto Rico is seeing a surge in hotel renovations throughout the country. Below are a few of the most significant updates coming to the region.

The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, a historic San Juan hotel built by Frederick William Vanderbilt in 1919, is poised to fully reopen. The hotel has magnificent Spanish Revival architecture, opulent interiors and dramatic ocean views. The Condado Vanderbilt has catered to sophisticated travelers since its inception in 1919. Among the hotel’s most celebrated guests were Charles Lindberg, Errol Flynn, Bob Hope, Arthur Rubinstein and President Franklin Roosevelt and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt.

During the ‘90s, the Condado Vanderbilt shut its doors indefinitely, until it reopened its food and beverage venues and event spaces in 2012. Executive Chef Juan Jose Cuevas, formerly of Dan Barber’s Blue Hill, is at the helm of the upscale 1919 restaurant, a farm-to-table culinary destination in the Condado neighborhood. The hotel’s guestrooms are set to reopen and welcome guests in summer 2014.

Early next year, the property will unveil a new $1 million spa in the Suite Tower, a refreshed Sereno Beach Front Bar & Grill Deck and updated guestrooms.
