New Eco-Lodge, More Flights to Laos

Feb 15, 2005
The Kamu Lodge, an eco-friendly resort, recently opened in Northern Laos 2½ hours upriver from Luang Prabang, along the Mekong River.

This eco-accommodation utilizes pollution-free energy by offering guests solar power for lighting and warm water in each of the resort’s 20 canvas-walled tents. Decorated with bamboo and topped by traditional thatched roofs, each tent comes with two twin beds, wooden furniture and an adjoining private bathroom. Restaurants offered by Kamu include a traditional Laotian sala (restaurant) for lunch among the rice patties and a separate facility for breakfast and dinner that serves customary cuisine of Laos.

The Kamu Lodge hosts standard two-day, one-night (with extension nights available) inclusive packages consisting of roundtrip transportation by Kamu Lodge’s traditional riverboat, authentic Laotian meals and a trip to sacred Pak Ou (Tam Thing) Caves.

Surrounded by a natural wilderness setting, the Kamu Lodge places an emphasis on sharing the simple ways of local Laotian life with its guests. Native staff encourage patrons to appreciate and learn from the experience with additional cultural activities, including rice planting and harvesting, panning for gold, fishing in the Mekong River, forest walks that include searching for medicinal plants in the local forest, swimming by a local waterfall and a visit to a nearby native village for a further cultural exchange.

Children under the age of two stay free with children 12 and under receiving a 50 percent discount. Agents and tour-operator options include reduced “contract rates.” Contact Kamu Lodge for details.

In other news, EVA Air will be adding a flight to Vientiane, Laos, beginning Feb. 24.

This new schedule offers three flights a week through Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport (CKS) Monday, Thursday and Saturdays arriving in Vientiane Airport (VTE), with same-day returns to Chiang Kai-Shek.

“Vientiane is an excellent addition to our Southeast Asia network,” said K.W. Nieh, executive vice president for EVA Air. “In cooperation with leading travel agents, we have already developed a series of group packages for trips that begin in Hanoi, Bangkok and Phnom Penh and end in Vientiane for the inaugural flight. We are also creating additional travel products that are very attractive and accommodate both demand and interests.”

Agents interested in discovering more about Laos or Indochina may consider exploring the upcoming issue of Distinctive Destinations Newsletter for Sophisticated Travelers Spring 2005. The newsletter focuses on the luxury market in travel.
