If you ask my son to name his absolute favorite hotel, I’m guessing he’ll say The Omni San Diego. Not because it’s modern, spacious and in the heart of San Diego’s lively downtown Gaslamp District (all true). It’s not the rooftop pool and outdoor terrace either — even though he loves the pool’s underwater speakers — or the views of Coronado, Mission Bay and the San Diego skyline. It’s because the Omni San Diego happens to be a pedestrian sky-bridge away from San Diego’s PETCO Park, the baseball stadium where the Padre’s play. Some of the rooms even have a view of the diamond.
One of our favorite family getaways is a Padre’s game and a weekend at the Omni. The kids get to play Wiffle ball at the Padre’s "Park at the Park" inside the stadium complex, and afterward they like to pose for photos right up against the outfield fence. Next, we check out the Padres Majestic Team Store, which has a field-level standing-room-only area just beyond the warning track in left field literally inches from the action. When the game is over, we walk back to our hotel for a swim. For dinner, there are dozens of restaurants just steps from the hotel.
This season, the Omni is offering Take me out to the Ballpark packages through Oct. 4 that start at $249 per room, per night, and include two general admission tickets, breakfast for two and a peanuts and Crackerjack amenity. For $279 per room, per night, guests get a premium room, field box seats, plus breakfast and the amenity. And for $400 per night guests can enjoy a junior suite, breakfast at McCormick & Schmick’s in the hotel, as well as field box seats and an amenity.
Packages require 14-day advance reservation and are based on availability, subject to blackout dates. They do not apply to groups, conventions or packages and cannot be combined with other discounts.

The Padres home opener is Monday, April 6, against the Dodgers. Maybe we’ll see you there.
