Peninsula properties are usually associated with the highest level of service in high-rent neighborhoods. For example, the Peninsula Beverly Hills and the Peninsula Hong Kong come to mind. It was a bit of a surprise then when a Peninsula property was recently announced in Yangon, Myanmar. The proposed hotel will be at the heart of a mixed-use development in the central business district of Yangon, adjacent to the famous Scott’s Market tourist attraction. The proposed hotel occupies the site of the former headquarters of the Burma Railway Building, an elegant colonial building and one of the most distinctive buildings in Yangon. At this date, the deal is still under review. If the proposed hotel proceeds, developers Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and Singapore-based Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd. plan to preserve and restore the existing structure as it is transformed into a Peninsula property.
