Although it has been a couple of years since I visited Martinique, it still holds a strong place in my memory. Martinique is an overseas region of France and its mix of Gallic and Caribbean influences makes for a heady tropical cocktail. On Martinique, clients can dine on French and Caribbean cuisine, listen in on Creole patois in the local market, sample a first pressing of rum in one of the islands distilleries or take a horseback ride through a rainforest to a secluded waterfall. Bottom-line: Martinique is a vacation destination that will get your clients firing on all cylinders. The island is continuing to expand and enhance its tourism product and this coming year, it welcomes the opening of two new boutique properties, referred to as “hotels de charme.”
La Suite Villa is a new boutique property located in the hills above the seaside village of Trois-Ilets, across the bay from Martinique’s capital city of Fort-de-France. When the hotel opens in 2010, guests will have the choice of villa or suite accommodations. La Suite Villa’s main house is constructed in the island’s traditional Creole style. The house has six suites, each equipped with its own Jacuzzi and panoramic views of the Caribbean. The property’s nine Creole-style private villas are vibrantly colored — think tropical greens and pinks — and are available in two- or three-room layouts. Each villa has its own private garden, covered terrace, outdoor shower, solarium and Jacuzzi. The villas are a good recommendation for honeymooners or any traveler looking for some privacy. An infinity pool overlooking the Bay of Fort-de-France is also on-site and the La Suite Villa restaurant and bar serves French-Creole cuisine.
Pomme Cannelle Village, which opened last May, is nestled in Martinique’s mountainous northern region in the town of Le Precheur. The boutique property has 16 air-conditioned rooms each including a fully equipped kitchenette, a television and Internet accessibility. Seven of its guest apartments are specially outfitted to accommodate disabled persons as well. The property also boasts an infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea below and has views of Martinique’s highest peak, the 4,582-foot Mount Pelee. The property is a good bet for families, couples and independent travelers interested in enjoying the nearby rainforest, hiking excursions and other eco- and adventure-tourism pursuits.
