Last week, JW Marriott announced the opening of JW Marriott Mount Kenya Rhino Reserve Safari Camp, an all-inclusive, 19-tent property in Kenya’s Solio Game Reserve that combines wildlife viewing with an emphasis on wellness and conservation.
Located in Laikipia between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the camp sits within Solio Game Reserve, a 45,000-acre private conservancy known for its longstanding rhino conservation efforts. The reserve is home to one of Africa’s largest populations of both black and white rhinos, as well as lions, leopards, zebras, waterbuck and more than 300 bird species.

Accommodations include 19 tented suites, including a two-bedroom option for families or small groups. Each suite features private outdoor space with a plunge pool and views of Mount Kenya, nearby waterholes or the surrounding savannah. Interiors incorporate locally sourced artwork, textiles and handcrafted furnishings by Kenyan artisans.
While traditional game drives remain the centerpiece of the experience, the camp also offers a range of activities that appeal to travelers looking to spend more time immersed in the destination. Guided walking safaris, cycling excursions and birdwatching tours provide different ways to explore the conservancy.
Photography is another key focus. Guests have access to professional Canon camera equipment and can receive guidance from resident photographers — an amenity that may appeal to wildlife photography enthusiasts or first-time safari travelers looking to improve their skills.
One of the property’s more distinctive offerings is an educational visit to the Solio Rhino Orphanage, where guests learn about the rehabilitation of orphaned rhinos before they are reintroduced into the reserve. The experience highlights the conservation work that has made Solio one of Kenya’s leading rhino sanctuaries and gives travelers additional context beyond traditional wildlife viewing.

Dining also draws heavily on the property’s surroundings. Mavuno, the camp’s signature restaurant, features seasonal menus built around herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in the on-site garden, while the signature Garden Table experience showcases freshly harvested ingredients in a multi-course meal. Bush breakfasts, dinners under the stars and Kenyan cooking classes connect guests with local flavors.
The Spa by JW offers treatments using locally sourced ingredients such as moringa, aloe, honey and cedar, while the signature Solio Passage half-day wellness program combines massage, hydrotherapy and forest bathing. Additional amenities include a fitness center, an outdoor pool and quiet spaces for relaxation.

Beyond environmental initiatives, the camp partners with local organizations through the Lazizi Welfare Foundation, supporting school meal programs and women’s artisan projects that create handcrafted guest amenities and retail items.
The camp is accessible via a roughly 30-minute scheduled flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport to Nanyuki Airstrip.
